    Through the Looking glass

Seven years ago EA and DICE games locked Assassin’s Creed and a futuristic parkour setting in a room and released the resulting product out into the world. The year was 2010, and Mirror’s Edge received mixed reviews. The problem was, that the games media thought it was a first person shooter – FPS (and lets be generous to DICE – that’s kind of how EA marketed it). Being polite to the developers, the combat in the game was crap. However, the running and jumping was twitchy and

    Far Cry from Prime

Far  Cry. It’s a long while since I was excited about a Far Cry game. I’m not sure how long ago it was but it was 2004 when the first game was released. As I was back in the PC gaming fold (after my dalliance with early consoles – I had a new job and money to spend on new kit) I was excited. It was one of the first games I remember that used (the then fairly new) pixel shader technology and a new swanky graphics card. Back when Crytek developed the IP. Before the days of Ubis

    LoveGames

Hey everyone, I’m back. So far I’m doing okay in this challenge to write at least one post per month. This is February, so with this post I’m two for two so far… Right, this is quite a quick post with something more substantial to follow later in the month (hopefully). I want to talk about a service called Boomerang (no – not the cartoon network I remember from the late 1990s but www.boomerangrentals.co.uk). I’m sure that plenty of gamers out there have heard of this service,

Final fantasy 15. Yes, we know it’s a ridiculous title. Yes, there is *another* instalment of one of the longest running game series. But…. How many games reach 15 numbered releases? (Not including X-2 or all the versions/sequels of 13 , or any of the subtitled games *and* includes two attempts at online only massively multiplayer games – 11 and 14) How many game series run for pretty much three decades? (The first Final Fantasy game was released in Japan in 1987) How many ga

    Where did everybody go?

Greetings. The game I want to write about this time out is a game that has been around for a while with many high score reviews, so for what it is worth, here are my thoughts on the strange experience that is Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. So first up explanation time, I didn’t play this game on my own. I shared the experience with my other half, Claire. After explaining the game to her and after we had enjoyed playing Gone Home she seemed interested, and as it was one of t

    Deus Ex Machina?

So, to start this whole “Year of posts” thing off here’s my first thoughts on the game I received for Christmas, Deux Ex: Mankind Divided. Those of you who have been listening to my rambling on games since I was a little person will know that I have a real soft spot for Deus Ex games. The first game from 2000 is one of my all time favourite games and unlike popular opinion I didn’t mind the second one (yes, the interface and augments in Invisible War were dumbed down some for

    It is your Destiny…

Sorry, this isn’t a post about Star Wars. No Darth Vader for the time being. Although there might be some Star Wars coming soon (sort of). So for the last few weeks I’ve been pottering about with games (I’ll come back in a few days to write a post about my main game) but at the moment I’ve been back to what appears to have become a bit of a classic. Destiny My colleague and some time *Inbetweeners voice* online gamer friend, Phil, finally cracked and bought a PS4. Brilliant.

    How low can you go?

So, next up on my indie kick was an interesting one. Limbo. Okay, so this one is dead easy to explain, but much harder to understand. A simple platform and puzzle game that is presented in beautiful monochrome. The world begins by introducing you to simple platforming puzzles – jump here, pull this lever and so on. Although it steadily gets more complicated involving levers, platforms, inverting the world. It even has climbing sections and sections that auto scroll, normally

    Moore’s Law

After I’d had my fill of Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris I decided I would try out a little game called Transistor. This title was put together by the people who brought you Bastion, so it has some pedigree. I never played Bastion, but after a cursory internet search, it seemed that transistor sounded like just my cup of tea. Turn based, SF, strategy action RPG by a team known for their story driven games? I’m in. Here’s the blurb from Supergiant’s website… Transistor is

    Temple of doom?

Hey out there to the world of people and the few who read the drivel I write. Today I’m going to write about a game and the reason behind why they are the games I’ve been playing recently. Over the last few months we have had the usual post Christmas slump in exciting new games and as such I’ve not had a huge amount to get excited about in the world of games. Everyone has been super hyped for things like Uncharted 4 and Doom. Neither of which particularly interest me. I’ve ne

    League of Legends

So, I have a confession. I watch esports. It’s not a big thing, but I’m not a sports person. I never have been. My brother is the one who does all the sporty stuff. Nothing to do with me. I just didn’t get the genes. I don’t even watch sports. Well, apart from Formula 1. Which is my jam, completely. For reasons I won’t go into here. Apart from F1 I don’t watch much in terms of sports. I’ll watch them to be sociable but that’s all. However, esports…. Gaming. As a sport. This m

    Do you remember the time..?

Do you remember the time…? When I played that game? You know…the one with the thing? No? Actually neither do I. Must do something about that… I have to admit that I need to thank Phil for this one. In the run up to Christmas and the new year we discussed a blog post reviewing what we had played through the year (Which Phil did – link). I never got around to it. Mostly because my memory is rubbish. Here is the link to mine – Link It’s nothing special and is mostly for my own

    Asa…Assas…to kill a guy…

Hey guys, it’s been a while. I know it’s been a while. Sorry. No excuses… Well, not really no excuses. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. That’s enough of an excuse. For a complete lack of anything apart from playing Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Okay. So Let’s start at the beginning. Christmas morning, 25th December. I open my usual PS4-game shaped present and oh look, it’s the new Assassin’s Creed game. In what has become a bit of a tradition, every Christmas one of my presents from

    Gaming with my girlfriend

This is going to be a little bit of a strange post. I want to talk about a couple of games I’ve played over the weekend, Herstory and Assassins Creed Syndicate. I will be doing a more in depth post on ACS at a later date, but today I’m going to write about a very specific section of the game. But first…. Herstory. What can I say about this game. I’ll do my best not to include spoilers, because that is partly what makes this game so amazing. I’m calling it a game, but there is

    Falling out? Not likely…

So, I expect by the time this is finished that a certain someone will call it a “love letter to a game” (You know who you are) but without further ado I give you… Fallout 4. Well, I’m not giving you the game…more like my early thoughts, from launch night shenanigans in Hull, to my recent adventures in the Commonwealth. So, lets start at the beginning. as all three of you are probably aware by now, I’m a librarian. (clue: suitedlibrarian.com) As part of my job I get to go o

    oooh..shiny..

Hey there everyone. It has been a while. Apologies for that (I often seem to be starting posts by apologising) but this time I have a (relatively) good reason. I haven’t been playing much, watching much or reading much of late. I haven’t been able to focus on any one game/show and although I am focusing on one book, I haven’t had as much time to read as I’d like. At the moment I am on a train heading for Manchester (mad fer it etc..) so figured this was a good time to write a

    Going on a Journey..

Hey guys, as a result of going on holiday and various other shenanigans it’s been a while since I posted anything on here. After a notification from a fellow blogger on here ( Seven Florins) and after reading his post, I feel the need to put finger to key ( pen to paper is still a better simile, but it’s the best I can do) I felt the need to comment on his post and write my own thoughts down on Journey. Recently Sony and thatgamecompany released an optimised PS4 version of th

    Do you dream?

Okay, So I know it’s been a while since I posted. There is a simple reason for this. Bloodborne. A week or two after it’s release I decided to treat myself to Bloodborne. It received a lot of good reviews but I was undecided. because I had never played any of the “Souls” games by From Software. Would I be able to do this? I’m known in my friend group for traditionally not being a finisher of games. (Although due to lack of disposable income this has changed in recent years) W

    Good enough?

I am currently playing Bloodborne (not even close being able to post about it yet though) and was talking in the office with Phil (@philcooper) the other day about it and Dark Souls/Demon Souls that he is sort of playing. The discussion about difficulty in games and how you feel that sense of success when you beat or boss, or get past that bit you have been stuck on… The conversation turned to how you feel like you suck at one of these games until something happens and you fe
